A popular Sri Lankan chain, the concept for Machan revolves around the theme ‘Awaken the Lion in You’. The machan were designed for Pubs and Places (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of Lion Brewery Ceylon PLC. With this specific theme in mind, 106 Architect paid special attention to Machan’s brand identity in the architectural design process.

The entryway is a spacious, paved rubble pathway dubbed as ‘The Lion’s Path’, that leads one directly to the bar. This pathway is enveloped on both sides by a blank, rustic surface with a weathered look that separates the pathway from the exterior road. Rugged designs were key in the finishing of the surfaces, creating a rustic look throughout. Silhouettes of exposed steel helped define the look and feel of the theme. Within the interior, lighting fixtures were fitted in levels to create an ambient and relaxing atmosphere.

1The interior can be described as a series of interconnected spaces with a smooth spatial flow. The pub opens up to a landscaped exterior, bringing in natural light and ventilation. 106 Architect played with natural light in this design, by allowing the sunset to create everchanging shadows on the rustic cement surfaces within.
